About the Event
We had our monthly intersectoral dialogue session on “Controlled cooking tests comparing the financial, energy, and time costs of different food and stove combinations in Nairobi, Kenya”. This virtual webinar scheduled for 11h December 2023 from 11 am (EAT) was organized by Gamos East Africa (GAMEA), Kenya Power (KPLC), Clean Cooking Association of Kenya (CCAK) and African Centre for Technology Studies (ACTS) and supported by the Modern Energy Cooking Services (MECS) Programme.
During this session, our colleagues in the sector, Tash Perros from the University of Liverpool and Sandra Banda of the University of Strathmore took us through the findings and highlights from two Controlled cooking tests (CCT studies) done separately in Nairobi.
Tash and colleagues investigated the fuel required to cook six regularly prepared dishes on ten prevalent stoves and fuel combinations (including LPG, ethanol, charcoal, kerosene, and electric appliances). They also tested the efficiency improvements from pre-soaking beans and using stovetop pressure cookers collected primary fuel cost data from across Nairobi and collated historical fuel prices from secondary sources spanning 2019-2023.
Sandra and her colleagues under the eCooking Capacity Building & Market Development programme (eCAP) carried out an appliance comparison study between commonly used household cooking appliances and their performance when cooking local Kenyan meals. The findings are from a series of Controlled Cooking Tests (CCTs) conducted in Kenya Power’s Pika na Power Kitchen, where local dishes representing typical cooking practices were prepared using different fuels and devices to compare performance. The study examined fuel/energy consumption, the time taken to cook the meals, and the cost of energy.
